Damages from last week’s wildfires in the San Diego area are estimated to exceed $57 million, according to a recent report. San Diego County Officials are seeking help from Sacramento in defraying the cost of these damaging wildfires.
Local governments have already spent $27.9 million in responding to the fires while private property owners are estimated to have suffered $29.8 million in losses. Some of these costs will be borne by insurance companies, but not all of them.
San Diego County officials have submitted preliminary figures to the state as part of a disaster reimbursement request. Last week, Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency in San Diego County.
SEEKING REIMBURSEMENT FOR EMERGENCY COSTS AND PRIVATE CLEANUPWhile the county continues to seek reimbursement under the California Disaster Assistance Act or CDAA to pay for firefighter expenses and other costs related to fighting the fires, homeowners continue to struggle with the cleanup and costs associated with private fire damage to their houses.
The City of Carlsbad estimates that it spent $12.5 million in firefighting efforts, $8 million of which will go toward restoring habitat and erosion control. The City of San Marcos likewise estimates $10.4 million spent, including $6.2 million in firefighting costs and $2.5 million in repairs to hillsides and other natural features. However, these numbers pale in comparison to the cost to private property owners such as $12 million in Carlsbad alone, $2.2 million in San Marcos and an astounding $15.6 million in private property damage in unincorporated areas.
Altogether, 48 homes were completely destroyed or severely damaged, along with apartment buildings and commercial properties.
