Whether it’s helping our friends throughout San Diego recover from a fierce storm or earthquake or bringing an older home back to its original beauty, we love everything about home restoration. While we’re happy to help you out with whatever project you have in mind, here are few tips you can use if you’re up for restoring your older home.
Know Your Home’s Brick and Mortar Cycles
Most structures will require some form of mortar maintenance every 50-60 years. Remember that you should only remove mortar that has deteriorated. It’s important to match the consistency and elevation as closely as possible. You should avoid sealers at all costs because they can trap moisture, which can be a huge problem down the road.
If you have slate roofing, you need to know exactly what type of slate it’s made of. If you’re not sure, we’re happy to help; our number is listed below. You should get into the habit of visually inspecting your roof at least once per year. It’s also a good idea to know the expected longevity of your roof. If your roof is nearing the end of its expected lifespan, it’s probably best to go ahead and spring for a new roof rather than pouring money into repairing something that’s so close to needing to be completely replaced.
ALL WINDOWS ARE NOT EQUAL
You may not know this but every window is different. While some in your home may be in need of a bit of weatherstripping, others may need nothing at all. You may also want to install interior air panels and curtains to save more on your energy bill.
GO EASY ON THE PAINT
Chances are good that your house has multiple layers of paint – inside and outside. Take it easy as you begin the task of removing it. Many over-the-counter cleansers can be toxic to your home, so you may want to try a combination of water and trisodium phosphate.
KNOW AND RESPECT YOUR HOME’S HISTORY
The time your home was built has long past, but memories of that time are preserved in just about every aspect of your home. From the architecture and layout to the materials used, simply walking around and looking at your home could be akin to a journey back in time. One of the keys to successful restoration is bringing modern materials into the home. It’s important to take great care so that any additions do not alter or destroy your home’s historical and architectural significance.
