Parts of the Santa Margarita River in North County and the San Diego River in Mission Valley are now heavily flooded from the recent rains. Flash flood warnings are in effect for both rivers, and a flash flood watch is in effect for the entire county, with more heavy rains already being forecast for the next few days.
It can be nearly impossible to be prepared for a flood. Even with months of warning, the El Niño fueled storms have continued to devastate the region, causing dangerous flooding of streets, homes, and businesses. Rescue workers are already on the scene providing help to residents, while cleanup crews are working 24 hours a day to try and remove and prevent the further spread of the flood waters.
LIFEGUARDS IDENTIFIED 5 AREAS THAT HAVE THE HIGHEST RISK OF FLOODS AND RESCUES:
Mission Valley East (of Interstate 805)
Mission Valley West (of Interstate 805)
San Ysidro/Tijuana River Valley
This information is a combination of tactical maps, flood gauge readings, and forecast data from the National Weather Service.
As the rains continue, streets are being totally washed out and have become impassible in many areas. Trees are falling over as the roots lose their hold in the saturated ground, and sinkholes have begun to form and cause the collapse of various structures. Residents have become trapped, requiring San Diego lifeguards to perform quick rescues from the dangerous surging waters. Strong El Niño storms continued sweeping through San Diego County throughout the past week.
Although the rain is expected to taper off soon, the damage from the flood waters will not be as easily remedied. These flood waters coming from overflowing rivers, runoffs, and sewage systems all blended together as they travel. They create a highly toxic “black water” that must be cleaned up and removed by professionals. Black water from flooding is known to contain biological threats such as viruses, bacteria, feces, along with decaying plant and animal remains. In addition, the waters pick up and transport chemicals from both residential and industrial buildings, adding to the already toxic slurry. If you have been affected by this flooding, it is imperative to contact a professional service for black water removal and a complete flood remediation plan. No short-cuts are worth risking the health of yourself or your family.
