HOW TO SPOT DAMAGE AFTER THE STORMOur region was walloped last week by torrential rains. In fact, in just over four months, parts of our state have gone from bone-dry conditions to being actually 216% above average for rainfall. Just before the storms hit, we shared tips for getting your home and business ready for the rains. The days after heavy rains are ideal for identifying and repairing damage-prone spots in your home. In this issue, We’ll talk about ways to do just that. HOW TO IDENTIFY ROOF AND AWNING DAMAGE.
If roof damage isn’t corrected immediately, it can lead to damage inside your home during the next storm. Among the obvious signs of roof damage are broken shingles or roof tiles that look as if they’ve shifted out of place. If you have damage to a metal awning – even if it’s minor – your best bet is to call a licensed technician to do the job. HOW TO SPOT WATER DAMAGE. Water damage may not be apparent after a strong storm. If there’s roof damage, the water may work its way through damaged areas on the roof and wind up in the insulation and drywall. The typical places to find water damage are in ceilings and around the exterior walls of your home. Another sign of water damage is a musty odor. CLEARING BLOCKED STORM DRAINS AND GUTTERS. While your drainage system may have worked flawlessly during this last storm, debris may have been pushed into it during the storm and needs to be cleared. The most likely places to look for debris like leaves, dirt, etc. are in the rain gutters along your home or business and the drains at the bottom of window wells.
