With the warmer days upon us, plenty of folks will be using their air conditioners more frequently. One of the best things you can do for your heating, ventilation, and air condition unit (HVAC) is to regularly change the filter.
In this issue, we’ll tell you why it’s important and provide tips for choosing the right filter for your unit.
WHY ARE FILTERS SO IMPORTANT?
One of the leading contributors to HVAC system failures is a dirty air filter. Because a clogged filter will restrict air flow in your home or business, your HVAC system’s fan motor could eventually burn out and cause the entire system to fail.
By not regularly change the air filter, you’re also doing no favors for those in your home or business with allergies and asthma.
How Often Should I Change the Air Filter?
The answer to that question varies.
PICKING THE RIGHT FILTER: IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MERV
Besides knowing the dimensions of the air filter you’ll need, it’s crucial to pay attention to its MERV rating. If it doesn’t have a MERV rating, you probably don’t want to buy it. That’s because MERV is the only filter rating that is certified by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers.
Standing for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, the MERVE ratings have a scale of 1-16. Simply put, the higher MERV rating a filter has, the fewer dust particles and other stuff will be able to pass through it.
Be careful, though. Just because a filter has a higher MERV rating doesn’t mean it’s automatically better. A high MERV rating means that the pores in the filter are smaller – meaning the holes for airflow are smaller. Reducing the airflow can make your unit work harder.
Instead, do a bit of research to find which of the higher MERV rated filters will allow the most airflow into your home.
