The holiday season is officially upon us, and while this time of year is a fantastic opportunity to get together with family and friends, it’s also a potentially dangerous time for home fires.
If you think we’re being alarmists, consider that nearly 47,000 fires occur during the winter holidays, claiming over 500 lives.
In this issue, we’ll talk about ways to prevent fires from starting during the Thanksgiving celebration.
YOU SURE YOU WANT TO FRY THAT BIRD?
Deep fried turkeys have quickly risen in popularity over recent years. While they are delicious, preparing them is also very risky. Reports tell us that each year, deep-fryer fires are to blame for the loss of 900 homes and five lives.
Alternatives include infrared and oil-less turkey fryers that can give you the same great taste without the grease.
But if you’re determined to use a deep fryer, make sure that it’s set away from your home and on a stable non-combustible surface.
If the fryer does indeed catch fire, don’t use water to extinguish it, as the grease will literally explode. Instead, use a fire extinguisher.
