The culprit for the torrential rains we experienced during the winter months is now known. They’re called atmospheric rivers, and we’ll talk about them in this issue.
WHAT ARE ATMOSPHERIC RIVERS?
These long and thin ribbons in the atmosphere are responsible for carrying water vapor found beyond the tropics. Moving with the weather, they unleash the water while making landfall.
The amount of water carried by some atmospheric rivers is equal to the total found at the mouth of the Mississippi River. Some atmospheric rivers are so powerful, however, that they can carry up to 15 times that amount.
As we found out during the winter, such an intense amount of rainfall in such a short period of time can wreak havoc on life in the city. The damage was so intense, Pacifica officials declared a state of emergency because of accelerated erosion storms and waves pummeled the shoreline throughout January.
ARE ATMOSPHERIC RIVERS INCREASING IN STRENGTH?
It appears so. Recent research has shown that a warming ocean combined with a warming atmosphere are producing more intense atmospheric rivers. This is very much like the more intense hurricanes were seeing in the Atlantic.
