While accidents and natural disasters can occur at any time and there’s little you can do to protect against them, fire is definitely something you can guard against. In this article, we’ll talk about ways to fireproof your home or business.
Keep fire extinguishers in as many rooms as possible.
Extinguishers are by far the best defense against fire. While most people will keep one in the kitchen area, it’s definitely a good idea to have one in every room of the house – even near the fireplace and in the basement, garage, and attic.
Regularly check smoke alarms.
While it’s good to have smoke alarms, it’s even better to maintain them. You should get into the habit of checking your alarm system every four (4) months and replace any weak batteries.
Go easy on the wiring.
If you’re installing a device that requires a heavy dose of electricity, bring in a licensed electrician to check the wiring to make sure there’s virtually no chance of an overload. You should also check for old and frayed wiring every six (6) months and replace those that show wearing.
Have furniture coated with a fireproof material and use fire-resistant carpeting.
This doesn’t have to be an expensive thing. For example, you can purchase fireproofing sprays in just about any hardware or furniture store. They can even make your furniture stain resistant – score!
Synthetic and wool carpets can be quick to burn. Fire-resistant carpeting is available and is a wise investment.
Clean the lint traps.
Dryers can easily catch fire if the lint trap is clogged. Clean it each time the dryer is used.
