Do you ever feel as if you’re ahead of your time? In a previous blog entry, we shared ways to ensure you find the right general contractor for any repair or restoration work at your home. A recent report by San Diego CBS News affiliate KFMB highlighted an undercover sting by law enforcement officials to arrest illegal contractors who have been preying upon local residents for repairs to El Niño damaged homes.
Officials with the Contractors State License Board posed as homeowners asking for bids to repair roof damage, install drains and replace fencing. Because unlicensed contractors are forbidden to bid on jobs that exceed $500, they were charged with a misdemeanor when they made their bids.
WHY LICENSING IS IMPORTANT TO YOU
If you hire a contractor who is not insured, bonded or licensed, you’re taking a huge risk. Licensing in particular is important because you may be on the hook for making good on any repair jobs that do not meet city and county codes. Work by an unlicensed contractor could also potentially negate your homeowner’s insurance policy.
If your contractor is not licensed, the chances are better than average that they are also not paying their workers’ compensation insurance. That could mean big trouble for you as you could be required to cover costs of injuries sustained on your property.
Because they are skimping on licensing and insurance, unlicensed contractors make it tough for the licensed contractors to bid on and compete for jobs.
