If new carpeting is on your holiday wish list, it’s best to arm yourself with knowledge before you go shopping. Just about every industry has scams, and the carpeting business is no exception. In this article, we’ll share some of the most common scams in the carpeting industry.
THE OVER-MEASURING SCAM
You could be out hundreds of dollars if your floor isn’t properly measured. Measuring for carpeting may sound easy but it’s actually rather involved. Also, few homes, rooms or apartments are alike; meaning that while some homes are easy to measure, others demand a huge chunk of time and expertise to measure.
If you need only 100 yards of carpeting, the salesperson may try to talk you into 110 yards for a lesser cost per yard. What they don’t tell you is that you’ll also be paying more for the extra padding and installation because the entire project is based upon the cost of materials.
Solution: Get a measuring tape and measure each room yourself. Specifically, you want to measure each room – including the closets – as well as the hallways. Add all the measurements together and divide the total by nine (9) so that you’ll have the square yards. As a precaution, add about three (3) additional square yards.
That should give you the maximum number of square yards you’ll need.
THE “PRIVATE LABEL” SCAM
This is actually more of a marketing ploy used by the big box retailers. It works this way. You see a carpet sample but feel the price is too high and tell the salesperson that you’ll look around elsewhere for it. The salesperson says you’ll likely not find it because no one else sells the same brand.
They’re lying because the same carpet is available at the next big box store – just under a different name or brand.
Solution: Unless you’re looking for a carpeting that’s very high-end, there’s no single company that is the sole provider of a specific type or color of carpeting. When you hear the phrase “private label,” it’s best to move on.
THE “FEEL AND FAKE” SCAM
Whether you shop for carpet in the store or have a rep come to your home or business, you’ll be looking at small sample boards of carpeting. They’ll have three or four different samples with different textures and thickness attached to it.
After you’ve made your selection, some companies will show up to do the job with the next lower grade of carpeting than you actually chose.
Solution: Thoroughly go over what the company brings to your home. If you’re not 100% sure that what they brought is a match with what you selected, ask to see the sample board again. Do not let any work continue until you are completely satisfied.
