The projected costs for the California wildfires that resulted in a state of emergency being declared are beginning to roll in.
The Sand fire alone is projected to result in a $28 million price tag to cover expenses for the firefighting and associated overhead.
While the federal government will be on the hook for most of the costs since most of the fire was centralized in the Angeles National Forest, Los Angeles County will have to contribute as well because the fire had its initial sparks on county land.
While the LA County Fire Department will not give a cost estimate until the fire is completely extinguished, the county should be able to get a bit of help from the state because of the called state of emergency.
COST OF FIRE SUPPRESSION EFFORTS SKYROCKETED
There are 18 national forests in California. From the start of 2016 to the end of June, $9.6 million had been spent by the U.S. Forest Service on fire suppression efforts.
By the end of last week, that number had shot up to $48.3 million.
A STATE RAVAGED BY FIRES
Thus far, there have been 440 fires in California with more than 86,000 acres being burned on national forest lands.
Officials with the U.S. Forest Service warn that because California wildfires typically get worse in the fall, we’re just now entering the busiest time of the year for fires.
