A recent article in the San Diego Union-Tribune gave a fantastic first-hand account of how our local firefighters are helping to battle the latest California wildfires.
One San Diego team of firefighters were sent to Gypsum Canyon, where they worked for 24 hours straight to put out hotspots near Route 91.
“When we’re thrown into the mix with a job to do, we don’t really have time to think about the situation,” said Lakeside fire Captain Matthew Buzzell. “It’s disheartening. We never want to see people lose their homes or properties, but that’s why we’re here — to help minimize that from happening.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO BE A SAN DIEGO FIREFIGHTER?

WHERE CAN I APPLY TO BE A SAN DIEGO FIREFIGHTER?
Every 1-2 years, the San Diego Fire Department will announce a 2-3 week window of opportunity in which they will accept applications.
You can pick up an application at one of the City of San Diego Community Service Center locations throughout the city.
WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY LIKE FOR A SAN DIEGO FIREFIGHTER?
Most of this information is taken from the San Diego Regional Fire Foundation’s Command Post site.
Because the fire station serves as the firefighters’ home, it’s up to the crew members to take care of chores like cleaning the station inside and out, making beds, grocery shopping (they pay for their own food) and cooking.
All of the fire trucks and equipment are thoroughly checked each morning to make sure everything is working properly.
If they’re not out on calls, the crew goes through training and physical conditioning exercises to make sure they know what to do and how to properly use their equipment.
In no emergency calls are taken, firefighters generally spend the evening hours with further training and taking care of the paperwork for reports that are required from emergency calls.
All of these activities will be stopped on a moment’s notice when emergency calls come in.
